Preoperative Instructions for Patients Undergoing Intravenous Sedation

1. Do not eat or drink anything for 8 hours before your appointment (see #3).
2. A responsible adult must drive you to your surgery, stay during the entire surgery, and stay with you at home for 24 hours after surgery.
3. If you were prescribed medication to take the morning of your surgery, take this 1 hour before your appointment with a small sip of water only. If you have a rescue inhaler (i.e., albuterol), please bring this with you the day of surgery.
4. Do not use marijuana for 3 days before your surgery. Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before your surgery.
5. Do not wear contact lenses or eye makeup the day of surgery.
6. Wear a short-sleeved shirt; sweaters and sweatshirts may need to be removed.
7. At least 1 fingernail on each hand must be free of nail polish/artificial nails/stickers – we use your fingers for an important safety monitor. Please plan around this.
8. If you have a significant illness such as pneumonia, bronchitis, influenza, or strep throat within 4 weeks of surgery, please notify the office as soon as possible; surgery may need to be rescheduled.
